Sebastian Coe, the frontrunner for the IOC president role, has hailed cricket’s inclusion in LA 2028 roster.

It will be the first time since 1900 that cricket has returned at the Summer Olympic Games. All the matches will be played in the T20 format, opening up new markets beyond South Asia.

“Well, from everything I’ve said (during November 2024 visit to India), you would recognise that cricket is in for the Olympic movement, particularly with the support that it will have not only in South Asia, but people from South Asia living in all our big cities,” Coe told PTI in an exclusive virtual interview.

“We have a very big Indian or South Asian community in London, in New York. This audience, this support goes way beyond just India, Pakistan or South Asia. It’s very important for the (Olympic) movement. And it will open up new Olympic markets, which is critical.”

However, there is no guarantee that cricket will continue to be included in the Olympic roster, at Brisbane 2032. The sport which is still to be recognized globally will be in the 2036 roster, if India hosts the marquee event.

Coe has been considered as the frontrunner to replace Thomas Bach as the next IOC President. His maternal uncle is an Indian from Punjab.

More than 100 members will vote on March 20 in the Greek resort of Costa Navarino, where the 144th IOC Session will be held from March 18 to 21.

The 68-year-old is currently the head of World Athletics.
