Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the Madrid Open 2025 due to a right abductor injury, he announced in a press conference on Thursday.
The World No.3 had sustained the injury during the Barcelona Open final defeat to Holger Rune, last Sunday.
Medical tests were carried out this week, following which, Alcaraz felt discomfort in the left hamstring, making him withdraw from the home tournament. He was due for the clay court action on Saturday.
“We have taken the decision to not take risks, to not worsen the situation for the future and to listen to my body. We have to take difficult decisions but we have made the right one. I will try to rest, recover and be back on the court as soon as possible,” Alcaraz said.
“At the Barcelona Open final, I had discomfort in the right abductor, but I also felt something in my left leg. I did some tests on Tuesday, awaiting the results and evaluating with my team and doctors as to whether I could play in Madrid in these conditions. I did everything possible to be able to play, but I have to listen to my body.”
It is likely that he will also miss the Italian Open 2025, slated to run from May 6 with his focus shifting on French Open title defense.
He began his clay season with a title-winning run at Monte-Carlo before falling short in the final at Barcelona.
Alcaraz was seeded second in Madrid Open. He was due to face either Zizou Bergs or Yoshihito Nishioka in the second round.
