Lalit Modi, the architect of the Indian Premier League (IPL), celebrated the birthday of the lucrative tournament on Friday.
IPL celebrates its 18th birthday in April, as the first-ever match of the tournament was played on the April 18. Calling IPL as the most recognized brand of India, Modi said on X, “It’s been an amazing run for the IPL over the past 17 years. From an idea that I thought about in mid nineteen ninety’s to launching a city based league IPL has captured the hearts of the Indian people and cricket lovers globally.
“It is the most recognised brand of INDIA as a country and established itself as the foremost global Sports and entertainment property. I am extremely proud of its achievement and the fact that today on its 18th birthday it is a must watch in everyone’s life. I wish it all the success and may it continue to delight one and all,” he added.
On his post, a fan commented, “All credit goes to you sir”, while another said, “IPL would have never been possible without you… working with you for a short while in Season 2, made me learn a lot. Respect”.
Under Modi, the IPL signed a record-breaking deal with Sony/WSG, became a cricket phenomenon, and transformed the lives of cricketers.
This happened after a host of Bollywood stars and business tycoons merged with cricket, entertainment, and massive commercial sponsorships, to make IPL a lucrative product.
However, Modi was suspended by the BCCI for alleged financial irregularities, bid rigging, and corruption. The accusations on him, included, money laundering, favoring certain franchises, and misuse of broadcast rights.
Following an investigation, he was banned for life from the BCCI in 2013.
