Sawan Barwal began the 28th Federation Cup with a meet record. The Armyman broke Surendra Singh’s 18-year-old record to clinch the men’s 10,000m in 28:57.13s.

Incidentally, this was not the best performance from Barwal as he clocked 28:49.93 while clinching the National Games title in Dehradun in February.

Meanwhile, Pranav Pramod Gurav stunned a strong field in the men’s 100m final at the Maharaja’s Stadium to clinch a gold medal.

The 23-year-old athlete, representing Railway, stunned national record holder Gurindervir Singh, former record holder Manikanta Hoblidhar and National Games champion Animesh Kujur clinch the top podium finish with the record timing of 10.27s.

Pranav had a great start at the 60m mark while finishing with a smart dip.

“I dedicate this gold to my grandfather who is in ICU in a Pune hospital,” said Pranav. “I’ve been finishing second often in major competitions, I didn’t expect this gold. With so many fast runners, I expected a national record today but that didn’t happen.”

Animesh (10.32s) took the second podium spot while Manikanta Hoblidhar clocked 10.35 to take the third spot. Manikanta had achieved the AFI’s Asian Championship qualification clocking 10.25s in the semi-finals.

In the women’s 100m event, Telangana’s Nithya Gandhe took the top honours in 11.50s.
