Italy’s fourth-seeded Jasmine Paolini ended the coffee debate with a strong opinion after it was ignited by second-seeded Iga Swiatek and ATP No.8 seed Alex De Minaur at the Australian Open 2025 on Thursday.
Speaking about her choice in coffee after brushing aside her Mexican counterpart Renata Zarazua 6-2, 6-3 in the second round, she said: “Hmm … not really! We drink espresso. For us, it’s tough to drink coffee here.”
Such is her disdain for Australian coffee that she said her coach Renzo Furlan travels with his own espresso machine.
“With Italian capsules of coffee,” Paolini emphasized. “He’s drinking a lot of coffee. Me too, but him much more.”
The interviewer Laura Robson continued to press her to put Australian coffee first. To which, the Billie Jean King Cup winner, said: “OK. Because we are in Australia!”
Earlier in the day, Swiatek and de Minaur, accepted their liking for Australian coffee.
“in Sydney, I found better coffee shops” than those in Melbourne, the Pole said.
“Overall, in Australia it’s hard to get wrong coffee,” she said. “Every coffee shop keeps really great quality.”
While a diplomatic De Mianur said, “There’s no better place for coffee than Australia”.
