Double Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen underwent a minimally invasive back surgery for his long-standing final disc issue, which has plagued him in the last few months.
The former World No.1 expressed gratitude after the surgery in an interview to Denmark’s TV 2 Sport.
“The surgeons removed the disc herniation that was pressing on the nerve. It was a minimal procedure, and everything went very well,” he shared.
“There’s been some work done on my back, so I have to take it slow”.
Furthermore, the Dane thanked the medical team who were involved in the surgery, including the surgeons, doctors, and nurses, saying he felt fortunate to be in such skilled hands.
He has already withdrawn from two key events — European Championships in Horsens (April) and Sudirman Cup (Mixed Team World Championships) later this month — due to his rehab process after the surgery.
There is no return date set for the Dane. “The first few weeks will be very quiet. I need to fully recover from the operation,” said Axelsen, who will return to his base in Dubai for rehabilitation.
He will undergo the rehab process at the NAS Sports Complex, under the consultation of medical team from Budolfi Privathospital in Aalborg and the German surgeon who performed the operation.
It is likely that Axelsen will make a comeback during the — Indonesia Open (June), Japan Open (starting July 15), and the China Open (late July) — all major BWF Super 1000 tournaments on the badminton calendar.
“I believe I’ll return stronger. I still feel there’s so much left for me to achieve in badminton,” he said.
