Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) dropout Jacky Kok will face India’s Ayush Shetty in the Thailand Masters 2025 main event on Wednesday after qualifying through two rounds.
The World No.101 defeated local shuttlers Puritat Arree 17-21, 21-11, 22-20 and Korakrit Laotrakul 21-16, 21-17 at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok to advance on Tuesday.
He was once dubbed the next Lee Chong Wei but his promising start was derailed by injuries, leading to his exit from the national team last year.
Earlier, he was a part of Malaysia’s gold-winning squad at the 2022 Asia Team Championships and also claimed the Swedish Open title that year.
Among others, Eogene Ewe fell to Indonesia’s Moh Zaki Ubaidillah 11-21, 11-21 while World No.102 Eogene defeated South Korea’s Cho Geon Yeop 22-20, 15-21, 21-17.
World No.90 Tan Jia Jie bowed out of the tournament after losing 22-20, 12-21, 10-21 to to Taiwan’s Liao Jhuo Fu.
In the women’s singles, Loh Zhi Wei missed the cut to the main round after losing 11-21, 21-17, 14-21 in a three-game thriller against Taiwan’s Hsieh Yi En.
