Malaysia are trying to cover all bases before their departure for the crucial Sudirman Cup 2025, slated to run from April 27 to May 4.

Malaysian coach Rashid Sidek, who spearheaded Malaysia to the 1992 Thomas Cup title, showed faith in Jun Hao, saying that he will be crucial to clinch victories in the men’s singles draw against Japan.

Japan has a 8-2 head-to-head record against Malaysia. But Sidek said the records don’t matter much.

“Japan look strong on paper but they are not invincible. They can be beaten and a surprise point from the men’s singles can almost assure Malaysia victory,” said Rashid.

“This is the best chance for Jun Hao to assert himself and bring out his best. He must not think that he is just making up the line-up but he can actually beat Kodai and Koki.

“Justin (Hoh) may not be fielded as he is a little short on experience but Jun Hao has played so many top 10 players.

“He must have the fighter’s instinct. A battling display will inspire the rest of the team as we have strong doubles pairs to fight for the remaining points.

“If Malaysia can top the group, they could avoid China in the last eight.”

Malaysia are likely to face Japan in the top of the table clash on May 1. The fifth seed will begin their Group C clash on April 28 against France and April 29 against Australia. The top two teams will qualify for the quarter-finals.
