For a long-time, the Indian javelin throw landscape has been dominated by the double Olympic medalist Neeraj Chopra.

At the 38th National Games 2025, where Olympian Shivpal Singh (with the best-ever throw 86.23 meters) and Rohit Yadav (80.47m) were in the field, Sachin Yadav clinched the gold medal with a Meet Record of 84.39m. And that reality can soon change.

“He’s my favourite javelin thrower now but I didn’t even know who Neeraj bhai was when I started javelin throw. A lot of javelin throwers in India started because of Neeraj bhai but I came my own way” he told Sportstar.

Rajinder Singh held the previous Meet Record for an effort of 82.23m in 2015. The men’s javelin throw national record of 89.94m belongs to Chopra.

He, however, missed the men’s javelin throw qualifying standard for the World Athletics Championships 2025, set at 85.50m.

In 2024, Sachin Yadav had thrown the spear to 82.69m at the Indian Grand Prix. He had thrown 84.21m at the Police Championships in New Delhi — an event not included in the official record.

But, as per a report in the Sportstar, he was close to breach the 90m mark in a foul throw at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

India’s new javelin throw coach, the two-time Olympic bronze medalist Sergey Makarov of Russia, talking about Sachin’s National Games throw said: “I think he had a little headwind. Otherwise, it looked like he was going to throw between 86-88 metres today itself”.
