Veteran Richard Gasquet overcame Matteo Arnaldi 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in a three-game thriller to reach the second round of his final Monte Carlo-Masters 2025 appearance.
It was his first win here since 2018.
The 38-year-old is set to retire at the end of the season. He was given a wild card to participate at the tournament, where he stunned Swiss legend Roger Federer, 20 years ago. He had, then, lost the semi-finals to the ‘King Of Clay’ Rafael Nadal.
In the match, Gasquet gave away 11 break points while the No.39 converted only three and dropped services five times with the Frenchman targeting his second serve.
Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot, another wild card entry at the Monte Carlo-Masters 2025, entered the second round with a 6-2, 6-1 upset over Jan-Lennard Struff.
It was the ninth win on ATP tour for Vacherot, who had the better serves. He hit five aces and won 85% of first-serve points without facing a break point.
