Grigor Dimitrov converted his seventh match point to advance in the Monte Carlo-Masters 2025 on Tuesday.
Dimitrov shook off a shaky finish to beat Nicholas Jarry 6-3, 6-4 and advance to the second round at the ATP Masters 1000 event.
The 33-year-old squandered five match points and three break points but made amends to impress. He has the second highest win-loss record now 24-11 in Monte-Carlo, among most active players on the tour.
“I guess you build into it,” Dimitrov said of his return to clay. “(He’s) a very tricky opponent. You just need to pick it up, that’s just how it is. You don’t have much time after Miami, so I have been fighting to do that. Whether I win or lose, it doesn’t really matter, it’s just about doing the right thing.”
Dimitrov made a comeback after losing each of his last two matches against Jarry on clay.
The Bulgarian used his variation against the Chilean big serving, to clinch a victory in his third attempt.
He will face French-Monégasque Valentin Vacherot in the next round.
