Germany’s Lukas Martens set a new world record in the Men’s 400m Freestyle event at the Swim Open Stockholm on Saturday.
The Paris 2024 gold medalist clocked a never-done-before 3:39.96, to become the first swimmer to breach the 3:40 for the distance. In the process, he broke German Paul Biedermann’s previous mark from 2009 by 0.11 seconds.

Biedermann had set the record wearing ‘super suits’, which were banned at the start of 2010. He is also the World Record holder in the 200m freestyle.
Martens made a quick start by completing the first 100m in 51.90, two and a half seconds inside Biedermann’s two-length split. He reached the halfway in 1:47.55, almost three and a half seconds inside world record pace.
The German slowed down in the second half of the race, having enough in hand to script history.
