Uttar Pradesh’s Paralympian Akash clinched the gold medal in the mixed 50m pistol SH1 category at the Dr. Karni Shooting range ahead of Paris 2024 Paralympian Rudransh Khandelwal of Rajasthan.

The Khelo India Para Games shooting event concluded with Rajasthan leading the medal tally with nine medals, including four and two silver.

Uttar Pradesh, meanwhile, clinched four medals, including two silver while Maharashtra’s run concluded with three medals, including two gold.

Khandelwal had clinched a gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol SH1 event but could not deliver his best on Tuesday as his pistol malfunctioned. It allowed Akash to take a clear advantage with the UP shooter pipping Tamil Nadu’s Sanjeev Kumar for the gold. Akash scored 15.7 in his last two shots to take the top honours.

“I am happy to win the Gold medal here at Khelo India Para Games. This is the first major step for me as I begin my journey towards Paralympics 2028 in Los Angeles and winning gold here will boost my confidence,” Akash said after the win.

For Akash, the Khelo India Games is like sanjeevni booti from the mythical Ramayana. “Khelo India Para Games has given us a new lease on life like ‘sanjeevani booti’. We are getting motivated and have a chance to develop. People are also recognising us as it is being broadcast live.”

Khandelwal said: “I am very proud of my performance at the second edition of the Khelo India Para Games. There was a malfunction of my weapon today while I was loading it. This incident was not intentional, and such malfunctions can sometimes occur. The matches were tough but I played well and in accordance to my skillset. So, I am happy with the overall result.”
