Tamil Nadu’s Ramesh Shanmugam was a major contributor in their Khelo India Para Games 2025 tally, clinching two gold medals in the men’s 800m T53/54 and men’s 100m T53/54 events respectively.

Shanmugam hails from a ‘tiny and remote’ village in Mannathampatty in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu. He has faced plenty of challenges before moving to wheelchair racing from para basketball.

“I have faced a lot of struggles in my life. I need to achieve something. Every day just comes and goes. But I had the desire to make a name for myself. I have to prove myself. I motivate myself every day. Now my parents are very happy. In the first KIPG in 2023, I won the bronze medal, this time I won the gold medal. My family is a big support. Without them, I could not have been a medallist,” he was quoted as saying by the SAI Media.

Shanmugam idolises MS Dhoni, so much, that once the 2011 World Cup winning captain retires he will stop watching cricket.

“Once MS Dhoni retires, I will stop watching cricket,” Ramesh Shanmugam says.

“I used to play cricket back in the day. I used to run fast and also was a wicketkeeper. I have been to several cricket matches as I really enjoy watching the sport, especially our thala MS Dhoni,” Shanmugam said.

Tamil Nadu finished the second day with nine gold out of the 44 on offer.  Haryana finished second with 7 medals while Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh followed with 5 medals each.
