Former England captain used a Shreyas Iyer-analogy to show the depth that Team India’s T20 squad carries.

Iyer played his last T20 against Australia in Bengaluru, on December 3. He was not a part of the Team India T20 squad which won the World Cup in Barbados in 2024.

In the two years after that, he led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the Indian Premier League (IPL) triumph and began the next season with an unbeaten 97 off 42 as the captain for Punjab Kings.

“Just to let you all know @ShreyasIyer15 isn’t in the Indian T20 side !!!!!! #IPL2025,” Vaughan wrote on X.

Iyer’s 42-ball unbeaten knock was laced with five boundaries and nine hits over the fence. His partner Shashank Singh who remained unbeaten on 44 off 16 deliveries was awestruck with the captain’s effort.

“It was a good cameo. The way Shreyas was batting, looking from the dugout was superb. I went in and Shreyas told me to go for it from ball one. He said to go for it before the last over started. Just watching the ball and hitting it. I try to get boundaries. The backing from the team and the management is vital at the number at which I go in,” he said in the mid-game interview.

Iyer has feature in 116 IPL matches. He has an average of 32.24 with the high score of 97 which he scored against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday.

In the last season, he averaged 39 in KKR’s title-winning run.
