India’s Virendra Singh, a resident of Laganu village in Sirmaur district’s Sangrah panchayat, will feature in the Open Para-Olympic Athletics Meet in Sharjah, UAE.
He has been selected for the 1500m and 5000m events, bringing joy and pride to the locals of his village. The competition will run from January 30 to February 6.
Singh is currently a pharmacy officer at the Ayush Department at Tonda in the Bogdhar region.
Earlier, he participated in several national para-Olympic events. His selection for the international meet marks a significant rise in his athletic career.
In 2017, he won a bronze medal in the 5000m race in Jaipur while clinching a bronze in the 1500m event in Panchkula.
He earned silver medals in the 5000m in Ludhiana and in both the 800m and 1500m events in 2019 while also securing a second podium spot in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m categories of other events.
Singh, known for his philanthropy, has raised INR 9 lakh for the treatment of underprivileged people in the Sirmaur community.
