Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu, top Indian men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, and rising Indian men’s singles shuttler Kiran George advance to the next round of India Open 2025 at the KD Jadhav Hall, Indira Gandhi Stadium on Tuesday.
Sindhu, returning for her first tournament after a triumph in the 2024 Syed Modi International, overcame a challenging Round of 32 clash against Sung Shou Yun of Chinese Taipei 21-14, 22-20.
She was the last Indian woman to win the BWF Super 750 event in 2017.
Meanwhile, Kiran George, coming in from the reserves, defeated Japan’s Yushi Tanaka 21-19, 14-21, 27-25 in a tough three-game Round of 32 clash.
The match lasted for 71 minutes.
Satwik-Chirag, Malaysian Open 2025 semi-finalists, survived a 76-minute cliffhanger to edge past Malaysia’s Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun 23-21, 19-21, 21-16 in the first round.
It marked the reunion with Malaysian coach Tan Kim Her after almost a decade.
“It is great to have Tan coach back after six years. A lot of credit goes to him for all our achievements so far. We were youngsters back then. When he left we were in the top 20. He’s had a good five years with the Japan team. Now, the approach is a lot different than it was in 2016,” Shetty said.
“Now, we are quite established. Earlier, his coaching was a lot more directional. He just told us to do this or that. Now, it’s a lot more conversational. We discuss what needs to be done and he’ll give his opinion. It’s still early days as it’s just been a month. But happy to have him back.”
