Independent shuttler Jacky Kok’s bid to first independent shuttler came to an end in the Vietnam International Challenge on Sunday.
Kok bounced back after a one-game deficit to take the match to the decider, losing 21-23, 21-17, 15-21 to Thailand’s Puritat Arree in Hanoi.
He had beaten Puritat twice in the past.
Kok trains under Ewe Hock at the Serdang Badminton Club. Hock believes having a coach in the corner would have done a world of good for him.
“Jacky was playing without a coach, while Puritat had someone in his corner. That makes a huge difference in a tight match,” said Ewe Hock.
“He was playing well but struggled to adapt when Puritat changed his tactics. This is exactly where a coach’s guidance is crucial.”
Ewe Hock revealed he is seeking sponsorship to travel with his players for selected tournaments but insists his shuttlers must prove themselves.
“I’ve told my players that I’ll look for sponsors to fund our travel, but they need to show real commitment and progress,” he said.
“I also need to work on their fitness and endurance, so they’re better prepared for top-level tournaments.”
Hock believes this will be a stepping stone for Jacky Kok.
“This was a breakthrough moment for him. Hopefully, he builds on this and achieves better results soon.”
