The Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) 2025 set off with the opening ceremony on Sunday, offering noise, colour and intent.
Nigerian Afrobeats artist Davido and American-Moroccan rapper French Montana took the centre stage at the AFCON 2025 opening ceremony in Rabat. The opening ceremony was followed by the hosts thumping Comoros 2-0 in the inaugural fixture, which was witnessed by 69,500 fans at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The opening ceremony has turned into quite a tradition in Africa’s flagship football competition.
In Ghana’s 2008 edition, Kojo Antwi, Samini and VIP offered some local performances, which enthralled the fans. American pop star AKON graced the occasion when Angola hosted in 2010, along with Wyclef Jean.
South Africa hosted the 2013 edition. Zahara and Lira brought home the magic with international star power coming from Nigeria’s D’banj.
The 2019 edition in Egypt turned into an eye-catching spectacle. Amr Diab and Tamer Hosny delivered breath-taking performances with Yemi Alade’s Total Africa setting the stage on fire.
At Cameroon 2021, the pan-African line-up included, Youssou N’Dour, Fally Ipupa, Dadju, Diamond Platnumz and Cameroonian star Tenor.
During the last AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, Magic System’s performed their theme song Akwaba as the main highlight while Tam Sir’s Coup De Marteau became a viral sensation on social media.
