Court Fines Cerespo For Tokyo 2020 Bid-Rigging

The Tokyo District Court on Wednesday fined major event company Cerepso of ¥280 million in the case of bid rigging, concerning to violating antimonopoly law, linked to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympics Games.

Former Cerepso executive Yoshiji Kamata, 61, was sentenced for 22 months in prison and suspended for four years. He is expected to appeal the ruling, as per a report in the japantimes.co.jp.

The ruling, as per presiding judge Kenji Yasunaga said that Kamata and other Cerespo officials moved to predetermine winning bidders with other companies in accordance with the wishes of Yasuo Mori, a 57-year-old former senior official of the Tokyo Games organizing committee who has already been convicted.

It also stated that Kamata along with Mori and other officials conspired which companies would win contracts related to test events for the Tokyo Games.

Five more companies and seven individuals were named in the case. Another major advertising company, Hakuhodo was ordered to pay a fine of ¥200 million in July this year.
