Ace Indian long-jumper Shaili Singh breached the Asian Athletics qualification mark at the Indian Open held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Tuesday.

She leapt to 6.45m to claim the gold medal while Meryl Mathew of Tamil Nadu with a best jump of 5.68, and the bronze was won by Pooja Saini of Rajasthan, clinched the silver and bronze medals respectively.

It was the first event for Singh after nine months. She last competed at the Interstate event, last year, where she missed out at the Paris 2024 qualification berth.

In her first two jumps, she leapt to 6.03 and 6.17, but the third and fourth jumps didn’t go her way as she recorded 5.86 and 5.07. However, her last attempt was the strongest, where she jumped to 6.45.

The upcoming Federation Cup will have plenty of Asian Championships slots in line.
