Gojira, the first metal band to perform at the Olympic Games during the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, won the Grammy Award 2025 alongside singer Marina Viotti on Sunday evening.

Their heavy-riff performance alongside the French-Swiss mezzo-soprano with 300 classical musicians on July 26 was an instant classic.

The members played from the window ledges and turrets across the history-laden Concierge, which held France’s most famous prisoner, Marie-Antoinette, during the French Revolution.

“It’s a real team effort, in the context of the Olympics and the ceremony, so a very, very special moment and we were already on a high because of that and now it ends with a Grammy so it wraps it up really nicely,” said guitarist and vocalist Joe Duplantier after claiming the award on 2 February for their version of revolutionary song, Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!).

The last Queen of France also made her own appearance at the windows during the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, holding her lopped off-head, while repeating: ‘It’ll be fine, it’ll be fine’.

Viotti, the Opera singer, appeared onboard a wooden ship with fiery pyrotechnics, adding to the decorated opening ceremony on the banks of the Seine River.

“I want to say thank you to everyone who recognised this song and this performance for being a performance of mixing two different music,” said Viotti after accepting the award with the band.

“I think it shows a very important message to the world because when we build bridges and we bring things that are different together it can be unique, it can be beautiful, and I think we have to go on like that.”
