Harbin 2025 Asian Winter Games Kicks Off With Torch Lighting Ceremony; Inviting Digital Torchbearers

The torch for the Harbin 2025 was lit on Monday, kicking off the 9th Asian Winter Games in Northeast China’s Heilongjiang Province, 18-day ahead of the marquee event which gets underway from February 7.

An Online torch relay was launched simultaneously, inviting internet users around the world for to join as the “Digital Torchbearer for the 9th Asian Winter Games Harbin 2025”.

As per the official website, internet users can participate in the event on the official account of the Harbin 2025 — “The 9th Asian Winter Games Harbin 2025” on WeChat, click the “Digital Torch” button on the homepage, or type the keyword “Online Torch Relay” to access the link and become a “Digital Torchbearer for the 9th Asian Winter Games Harbin 2025”.

The torchbearers will receive a unique certificate for participation.

India will reportedly send a contingent of 35 members (19 men and 16 women) for the 2025 Asian Winter Games after snubbing athletes from snowboarding (4), ski mountaineering (8) and men’s ice hockey team (23).

The decision to axe the disciplines was taken by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) as a number of athletes did not meet the criteria.

Over 1,200 athletes from 34 countries in Asia will participate in the largest ever continental event till date. Cambodia and Saudi Arabia are set to make debuts.

The first medal will be awarded on February 8 with the highly-anticipated short track speed skating events set to take place on February 8 and 9.
