Lindsey Vonn’s return to Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy to an unexpected result.
After crashing in the first training run and finishing 20th in Saturday’s downhill, the US Alpine Ski great did not finish (DNF) the Super G World Cup event on Sunday.
Vonn crashed after losing her balance while chasing run leader Federica Brignone at the second checkpoint narrowly.
“I was skiing really well,” the 40-year-old later explained to reporters.
“I definitely made some mistakes on the top, but I got a little bit behind the course and tried to pull it off. Then my skis kind of clicked together and I lost my balance.”
She, however, was left frustrated while rising on her feet with her ski pole before skiing down the Olympia delle Tofane slope to applause from the local crowd.
Incidentally, the Minnesota-native records the most World Cup wins (12) in Cortina.
The returning Winter Olympian will wrap up the second phase of her career at the Milano Cortina 2026.
“I think in general this weekend was really positive, but I couldn’t quite put it together. I think it’s going to take a little time, you know? I think last weekend went so well that everyone’s expectations were really high,” she said, talking about the silver linings.
“This is a journey that no one’s taken before. So I’m trying to be patient. I need more training. I need more time. And I think it’s actually kind of a good thing that I didn’t do well this weekend because it leaves me really hungry for more and also hopefully for next year. You know, I know that I need to make improvements. I don’t have really any training and there’s a lot of room for improvement,” she added.
She will be competing at the Super-G and downhill next weekend in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
