Praveen Chithravel qualified for the World Championships in the men’s triple jump event at the 28th Federation Cup 2025, which concluded in Kochi on Thursday.

Chithravel recorded a jump of 17.37m in his third attempt at the Maharaja College Stadium, to match his previous national record set in 2023 at an athletics event in Cuba.

The effort saw him breach the men’s triple jump qualifying for the World Athletics Championships 2025, which was set at 17.22m. The marquee event will be held in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to 21.

With his first leap of 16.66 m, he also breached the Asian Championship mark of 16.59m. Asian champion Abdulla Aboobacker registered his best effort of  16.99 to clinch the silver medal.

In an eventful final day, Animesh Kujur broke the national record in men’s 200m with a timing of 20.40s. He pipped Amlan Borgohain (20.80s) to record the best timing in Asia, so far, in this ongoing season and also better entry standards of 20.53s for the Asian Athletics Championships set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI).
