India began the 2025 Swiss Open on a mixed note as men’s singles player Srikanth Kidambi and women’s double players Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand advanced while Sankar Subramanian and Ayush Shetty were knocked out on the opening day.
Kidambi clinched a hard-fough 23-21, 23-21 victory over his Indian compatriot H.S Prannoy while the World No. 9 defeated Aline Müller of Switzerland and Kelly van Buiten of the Netherlands 21-16, 21-17 in a 32-minute clash.
Treesa-Gayatri will face Germany’s Selin Hübsch and Amelie Lehmann in the next round.
Meanwhile, Malvika Bansod struggled to overcome a three-game thriller. She was knocked out 22-20, 14-21, 19-21 by Canada’s Michelle Li.
Priya Konjengbam-Shruti Mishra lost to World No.61 pair Nazlıcan Inci and Bengisu Ercetin lost to 11-21, 19-21 while Varshini Viswanath Sri-Arathi Sara Sunil were beaten by Netherlands’ Debora Jille and Danish shuttler Sara Thygesen.
At the St. Jakobshalle, Basel, qualifier Ayush Shetty faced a tough challenge against Kento Nishimoto. He lost 15-21, 19-21 in straight games.
