Hong Kong began their 2025 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship with a 0:5 loss to Malaysia at the Qingdao Conson Sports Centre in China on Tuesday.
The mixed doubles pair of Lui Chun Wai-Fu Chi Yan and the men’s doubles pair of Law Cheuk Him and Yeung Shing Choi took their respective clashes into the decider but struggled to get the better off their respective oppositions.
Malaysia men’s singles coach, K. Yogendran, took note of Hong Kong’s performance ahead of their Group B clash against the side on Wednesday.
“They rested their ‘first team’, likely to keep their players fresh for our match. We are ready to face their best,” Yogendran said.
Earlier, Hoo Pang Ron was named the Malaysian captain for the continental event.
Pang Ron and his partner, Cheng Su Yin, are the second-best mixed doubles pair in the national team behind Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei.
Malaysia are drawn in Group B with Indonesia and Hong Kong.
The Malaysian captain said that his team will be unperturbed by the cold weather in Qingdao, China.
The last time Malaysia met Hong Kong in a mixed team event was in a 2009 Sudirman Cup Group Stage, where the former won 4-1.
