Hong Kong defeated Malaysia in the 2025 Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championship on Wednesday with insider information.

By the virtue of the victory, Hong Kong entered the quarter-finals.

Four Malaysians in the Hong Kong camp orchestrated the 3-2 win over Malaysia in the Group B clash of the continental event.

The Hong Kong camp comprises former BAM director of coaching Wong Choong Hann, Tan Bin Shen, Jeremy Gan, and Loh Wei Sheng.

Hong Kong took a 1-0 lead in the mixed doubles clash when Tang Chun Man-Ng Tsz Yau, outplayed Malaysia’s world No. 15 Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yi 17-21, 21-17, 21-11 in 59 minutes at the Conson Sports Centre

Malaysia restored parity through World No. 53 K. Letshanaa in the women’s singles clash against Saloni Samirbhai Mehta.

Hong Kong, later, clinched consecutive victories in the men’s singles and women’s doubles clash.

“We fielded our best players to face Hong Kong’s best, and we know that this would be a 50-50 match,” said Malaysian men’s singles coach K. Yogendran.

“We also knew that the deciding point would come from the mixed doubles. We chose Pang Ron-Su Yin because they had a better record against Tang Chun Man.

“But Chun Man carried his role as the senior player in the team well to help Hong Kong.

“We chose Justin Hoh ahead of Leong Jun Hao as Jun Hao has a poor record (0-2) against Lee Cheuk Yiu. We thought that Justin could spring a surprise, however, Cheuk Yiu’s experience carried him to victory.

“I’m very pleased with how Letshanaa and Wei Chong-Kai Wun played, winning a point each for the team, and our women’s doubles tried their best against higher-ranked opponents.”

Malaysia are in a must-win situation in the next match.
