India’s hope for a podium finish rests on the women’s doubles pair of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa. The seventh seeded duo entered the Syed Modi International 2023 women’s doubles final after their Japanese counter-parts Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota decided to withdraw from the semi-finals.
The women’s doubles semi-finals started on an even note as the Japanese pair was leading 11-10 into the first game at the mid-game interval. However, Hirota suffered an injury to her knee after slipping and falling on the court. She, immediately, received medical attention but eventually decided to withdraw from the match.
Crasto and Ponnappa will take on the third seeded pair of Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi in the final on Sunday. Earlier, the Japanese pair had defeated their Australian counter-parts Setyana Mapasa and Angela Yu to enter the BWF Super 300 tournament.
The results of the Syed Modi International 2023 will be extremely crucial as it will be count towards the players’ qualification rankings for the Paris 2024.
