What is Athletics?

Athletics, commonly known as track and field, is a group of sports that involve running, jumping, and throwing. It’s one of the oldest forms of organized sports and includes a wide variety of events that test an athlete’s speed, strength, endurance, and agility. From sprinting to long-distance running and from high jumps to shot put, there’s something for everyone in athletics.

Sprint Events:

  1. 100m: The 100-meter dash is the shortest and fastest event in athletics. Runners explode out of the starting blocks and race to the finish line in a matter of seconds.
  2. 200m: In the 200-meter sprint, athletes run a curve around the track and head down the straightway to the finish line. It requires a combination of speed and endurance.
  3. 400m: The 400-meter race is often called a “sprint with a curve.” Athletes run a full lap around the track, pushing their limits in terms of speed and endurance.

Middle-Distance and Long-Distance Running:

  1. 800m and 1500m: Middle-distance races test an athlete’s ability to maintain speed and endurance over longer distances.
  2. 5000m and 10,000m: These are long-distance races where runners compete to see who can outlast the competition over several kilometers.

Jumping Events:

  1. Long Jump: Athletes sprint down a runway and take off from a board to jump as far as they can into a sandpit.
  2. High Jump: Competitors jump over a bar set at a certain height, and the bar is gradually raised until only one athlete remains.

Throwing Events:

  1. Shot Put: In the shot put, athletes throw a heavy metal ball (the shot) as far as they can. Strength and technique are key here.
  2. Discus: This event involves athletes throwing a circular disc as far as possible. It requires strength, technique, and balance.
  3. Javelin: Athletes throw a spear-like javelin as far as they can, combining strength and technique.

Multi-Event Competitions:

  1. Decathlon: The decathlon is a two-day competition in which athletes participate in ten different track and field events, including sprints, jumps, throws, and distance races.
  2. Heptathlon: The heptathlon is the women’s equivalent of the decathlon, featuring seven events that test various athletic skills.
